Welcome to my heartfelt holistic life. I’m Michelle Rivera, a homeschooling mom of 2, former makeup artist and esthetician and clean beauty advocate! Here is my honest to goodness story.
A Story From The Heart
For me, motherhood was the catalyst for my healing journey. When I learned I was pregnant with my daughter in 2012, I knew that nothing would be the same. I didn’t know that my research and eventual home birth would forever change who I am. I was a mother and I cared deeply for the sweet being that I held in my arms.
I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 18 years old and given a hormonal birth control pill to regulate my cycles. I also ate junk food, was severely depressed, stayed out all night, was sick all of the time and eventually hit a wall.
There were SO many symptoms including weight gain, brain fog, irregular cycles, migraines and sometimes I’d end up in the emergency room with panic attacks and enlarged lymph nodes. Western medicine was not working and for every prescription I was put on, another would soon pop up alongside it. By the time I was 22 I was on over 5 different prescriptions and was getting sicker and sicker.
Enough was enough.
I was pregnant with my daughter in 2012 and quit everything I’d been doing to my body. Miraculously, I began to heal and after giving birth I began to research alternative healing modalities and low-toxin living.
One of the most exciting things that I learned was about hormones or what some would call endocrinology. I began to see the link between oxidative stress on the body and mind with disease and illness.
At this point i’d work in the cosmetics and beauty industry for over a decade with absolutely no idea of the link between carcinogens and toxins in makeup, skincare and bath products. Back in the early 2000’s there were some fringe brands doing toxin-free or organic makeup but they certainly weren’t the norm and they failed to perform in many ways.
In 2011 I went to school and became a licensed esthetician absolutely committed to finding natural beauty brands that wouldn’t have to sacrifice safety for performance. I was SO disappointed when I learned about all of the green washing tactics and how many products were still so laden with unnecessary chemicals.
After giving birth to my daughter I began to try different types of clean eating, stress reduction techniques and replacing toxic beauty products with cleaner or even homemade options.
Believe me when I tell you that I’ve tried EVERYTHING. But I believe that so much of life is just figuring out what doesn’t work. Now, my daughter is 8 years old (my son is 2). I’m still 100% free of pharmaceuticals, trying my best to eat clean, take really good care of myself and read all of the labels.
I’m so passionate about educating myself and others on the impact of lowering our toxin loads. I also still LOVE to do makeup and talk skincare. A rebel at heart, I’m all about leading a heartfelt, holistic life of service while being mommy to my 2 littles.
